Twitter Rules
Since there seems to be a lot of bloggers proclaiming expert status on “How to Twitter”, I thought I’d throw in my ideas…
I was just reading a blog post that states that users should not tweet their blog posts because that’s what RSS Feeds are for. Note to self: not everyone uses an RSS feed. Personally, I love Google Reader…if only I could remember to log in as much as I do to twitter.
I was reading another post that said businesses should not be using Twitter to self-promote. Well, sure self-promotion can go too far, but how do you define self-promotion? To some extent, “self-promotion” is how business survives and grows. Would Coca Cola be such a huge brand if it did not “self-promote” *cough* “advertise”?
The reality of what will make Twitter more usable and user-friendly is that it is extensible and malleable. That’s why there oh I don’t know…thousands of twitter APIs. In my job, I follow a lot of people. Some of those people are only tweeting sometimes about things I care about. Some people are only tweeting about things I care about. So how do I manage to keep up with all the tweeting? I use TweetDeck to follow keywords that are of interest, or to follow specific groups or Tweeple.
So to those who are blogging about their gripes with how other people use Twitter, I think perhaps you might want to re-think your own “Tweeting Strategy” and figure out how to follow the people you want, while having a better experience. Part of what makes this new “Social Era” so great is that we all get to decide how to engage. So maybe call-up Tivo and ask them to partner with you to filter out the “stuff” you don’t want to see.

Thanks for the post! People are crazy for not using more Twitter.
and funny enough I was ready @garyvee’s book Crush It! today and he had link to Chris Brogan’s blog: http://www.chrisbrogan.com/50-ideas-on-using-twitter-for-business/ …and in this blog post Chris Brogan points out that, “If someone says you’re using twitter wrong, forget it. It’s an opt out society. They can unfollow if they don’t like how you use it.” Rock on Chris!
